There are many forces in baseball. One of the many forces in baseball is drag. Drag is another term for fluid friction and air resistance. Drag causes a baseball in midair to slow down because of the air that is acting against it. It doesn’t always affect the ball the same way though. Drag affects a faster ball more than a slower ball. It also depends on the weather. If there is more density in the air, the more drag affecting the ball, but the less density in the air, the less drag on the ball. This explains why playing in rainy weather is not a very good idea because the air is more dense. If a pitcher throws a fastball in the rain, the drag on the ball would be much greater than if he/she threw it in clear weather. |
