Magnus Force

In the top picture, the person is showing the viewer how a curveball is held before it is thrown because if it is not held right, the ball will not curve. In the bottom picture, a diagram is showing why a curve ball curves.

Magnus force is the force that causes a ball to curve. This concept is used in a few sports including baseball, soccer and golf. In baseball, the many stitches on a baseball and the rotation that is acted upon the baseball when it is thrown or pitched, causes one side of the ball to have more pressure than the other side. In the result of this, the baseball curves and depending on the way the pitcher applies the rotation, it may curve vertically or horizontally. Many experienced pitchers intentionally throw curve balls to confuse the batter because the baseball doesn’t go in a straight line.
